Deerfly

Deerfly

A common fly found worldwide is the deer fly. Also known as the gadfly, it is closely related to the horsefly. It has a black or brown body with dark markings on its wings. Known for their slowness and their painful bite, deer flies, like horseflies, inflict a painful wound with their sawblade mandibles that cause the blood to pool. They then lap up the blood "like dogs lapping up water". The bites are usually from a female and are known to sometimes carry anthrax and tularemia. Deer flies are in the order Diptera.
