The red-spotted toad is a small, long toad that has round parotid glands
(glands in front of and below the ear) that are the same size as their
eyes. They can grow up to three inches in length and have a flattened
body that allows them to crawl into otherwise inaccessible crevices. The
red-spotted toad's coloring is slightly variable and can be lighter when
near limestone and darker when near volcanic rock. All have raised reddish
spots on their dorsal side and are a creamy white underneath. These toads
can be found from southern Nevada to southwestern Kansas and south to
Mexico and Baja, California. They prefer a riparian habitat, eat insects,
and are nocturnal during hot summer months.
