The desert spiny lizard is yellow or brown with occasional spots and has enlarged, rough, pointy scales. Some males have blue patches on their bodies and throats. Breeding females may have a red to orange tint on their heads. Spiny lizards are considered shy and prefer to live in arid to semi-arid areas that provide some cover in the form of rocks, wood, or cliffs. They are not commonly seen in open habitat. Insects, other lizards, and plant material make up their diets. Roadrunners, hawks, snakes, and bullfrogs prey upon them. Desert spiny lizards are in the family Iguanidae.
