  Sagebrush Desert Climate

Elevation: Below 4500 feet

Location: Monument Valley, much of the southern half of San Juan county

Environment: Also called the Great Basin desert, because it describes the many continuous arid valleys in the southwest and west. Rainfall averages less than 10 inches annually, most of which comes in the spring and fall "monsoons." Plants are well-adapted to drought conditions and include cacti and bunchgrasses. Trees are rare, and wildflowers are seen only after a wet winter.
