Binary Stars

Binary Stars - by Yukio Shishido. Illustrations from String Figure Magazine (March 2000 issue).

Step 1

Place loop on 1 and 5 (Position 1).

R2 picks up L palmar string...

Step 2 ...L2, through R2 loop from above, picks up R palmar string.
Step 3

You now have Opening A.

Release the loop on 1 and extend (the black square means “release the loop on this finger”).

Step 4 1, under the 2 loop, picks up 5n.
Step 5 5, under the 2 loop, picks up 1n.
Step 6 1, under the 2 loop and upper 5f, picks up lower 5f (a transverse string).
Step 7 5, from below, removes the 2 loop (do the action illustrated by the arrow first, then release the index loop, as indicated by the black square).
Step 8 R2 hooks up the transverse 5n string.
Step 9 L2 picks up R2n (in this case, the string that runs from R2 to R5).
Step 10 R1 hooks up 2n.
Step 11 L1 picks up upper R1n (in this case, the string that runs from R1 to R2).
Step 12 Release the loop on 2 and extend. This move forms the center of the final design.
Step 13 With the help of the opposite hand, Navaho the loops surrounding 1 and 5, releasing the “straight across” palmar string only (the string labeled with a black square).
Step 14 Extend with fingers pointing away from you. You have ‘Binary Stars.’
